Valentine’s Day: The Meaning, History, and Celebrations at Cambian Hereford School
Valentine's Day, celebrated annually on February 14th, is a day filled with expressions of love and affection. Though it has become widely associated with romantic gestures, the history of Valentine’s Day is deeply rooted in both religious and historical traditions.
The History of Saint Valentine
The origins of Valentine’s Day can be traced back to the Roman Empire. There are several legends surrounding Saint Valentine, but the most widely accepted story is of a priest named Valentine who lived during the reign of Emperor Claudius II.
According to one tale, Emperor Claudius had banned marriages for young men, believing that single soldiers were better fighters. Valentine, however, secretly performed marriage ceremonies for young couples in love. For defying the emperor’s orders, Valentine was arrested and eventually executed on February 14th, around the year 269 AD.
Over time, Saint Valentine became a symbol of love, compassion, and sacrifice. His feast day, February 14th, gradually transformed into a celebration of love. Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated worldwide with various customs, from exchanging love notes to presenting gifts like flowers, chocolates and cards.

In Food Technology, students got creative by cooking pizza and baking cakes and profiteroles inspired by the theme of love. With hands-on experience, they learned how to cook pizza from scratch, many of which were heart shaped and decorated with heart peperoni. Alongside this, students baked and decorated sweet treats adorned with red and pink fruit/icing.
The activity not only allowed students to express their culinary skills but also gave them the chance to explore the cultural significance of food during celebrations.
In Science, things took a more intriguing turn as students dissected lamb’s hearts. This practical activity provided an opportunity to study the anatomy and function of a heart, offering a fascinating way to connect the symbolism of hearts with real-life biology. While it may have been a bit unconventional for a Valentine’s Day lesson, it definitely sparked curiosity and excitement about the workings of the human and animal body.
Finally, in English, students had a "blind date" with a book. In this classroom activity, students were encouraged to explore literature that explored themes of love, relationships, and human connection. Whether through poetry, short stories, or excerpts from novels, the students were able to dive into the deeper meanings of love, broadening their understanding of how love is expressed in written words.
