Great Dunmow School Celebrates World Book Day
with Creativity, Fun, and a Footy Twist
Great Dunmow School took a page out of the book of fun and creativity on World Book Day, as staff and students alike came together to celebrate their love of literature in the most imaginative way possible. The event, which featured a colourful array of costumes, a lively quiz, and plenty of literary spirit, was a true testament to the school’s commitment to promoting reading and imagination.
The day kicked off with an array of students and staff showing up dressed as their favourite book characters. From classic literary heroes to modern-day favourites, the costumes ranged from the 3 Little Bears to a Gangster Granny to talking animals and quirky villains. Each outfit was a reflection of the individual’s passion for reading, with some even making their own costumes for the occasion.
But the fun didn’t stop there. The highlight of the day was the Great Big Footy and Booky Quiz, a live event that saw both students and staff competing in a test of their knowledge of both football and literature. Hosted by the charismatic Kit Brown, the quiz was filled with exciting questions that tested participants on everything from classic novels to the latest football trivia.
“The energy was fantastic,” said Eleana Clark, Deputy Headteacher. “It was wonderful to see both the students and staff so engaged. Everyone came together, showing off their knowledge of books and football, and it really felt like a community celebration.”
The quiz featured fast-paced rounds, with participants buzzing in with their answers, earning cheers and groans from the crowd. Some rounds were dedicated to football facts, while others focused on literary classics, making sure the event appealed to all interests. The competitive spirit was high, but it was clear that the emphasis was on having fun and fostering a love for both reading and sport.
English Lead, Mairead Maloney commented, “World Book Day is a fantastic opportunity to not only celebrate reading but also to encourage creativity and fun in our students and staff. It’s been great to see everyone so involved, whether they’re dressing up or getting their thinking caps on for the quiz.”
The day wrapped up with plenty of smiles, laughter, and a renewed sense of excitement about reading. It was clear that, for Great Dunmow School, World Book Day was a resounding success—an event that blended imagination, literature, and community in a way that everyone could enjoy.
As the school looks ahead, it’s clear that World Book Day will remain a cherished tradition for years to come, sparking the joy of reading and learning in students and staff alike.
