Great Dunmow School is celebrating the grand opening of its much-anticipated new games room, a vibrant space designed to offer students a much-needed break from their studies. The state-of-the-art facility was created following a vote through the school’s Student Voice, ensuring the space reflects the needs and interests of the pupils.

The games room, which opened this week, boasts a variety of activities to suit every taste. With a pool table, air hockey, and table tennis, there’s no shortage of entertainment for students looking to unwind. For those seeking a more relaxed environment, a cosy lounge area has been set up, alongside a den-building zone for creative and social activities. Additionally, a boxing bag has been installed for students to blow off some steam after a busy day of lessons.

“We’re thrilled with how the games room has turned out,” said Assistant Headteacher Olivia Lampard, “It’s fantastic to see how Student Voice has had a direct impact on creating a space that genuinely enhances the student’s experience. The room is designed to offer a space for relaxation, teamwork, and physical activity, which will help improve both mental and physical wellbeing.”

The idea for the games room was born out of a recent Student Voice survey, where students were given the chance to suggest ways to improve their school environment. After much deliberation, the overwhelming consensus was to create a recreational space that could cater to a variety of interests, providing a balance to the academic rigour of school life.

“I’m really excited about the new games room,” said Austin, a Year 8 student. “It’s great that we got to have a say in what it looked like. It’s a cool space to hang out in and have a brain break.”

The launch of the new games room is just one part of Great Dunmow School’s ongoing commitment to student wellbeing and engagement. With more initiatives planned in the coming months, it’s clear that the school is focused on creating a positive, inclusive environment where students can thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

The games room is now open during breaks and lunchtimes, with students eager to take full advantage of the new facilities.
