Residential Services

Residents of Shap Road are encouraged to be active, and to engage with the community as much as possible.

Many activities are driven by the interests and hobbies of residents, and we support our residents to both pursue existing hobbies, and offer insights into new hobbies that may be of interest.

Our residents engage in many clubs, activities, and events, and travel around Kendal and surrounding areas on local transport, with the support of our Support staff. Our Residents are well known to the local bus drivers, who take great care of us when we are travelling.

At least twice a year, residents visit external locations for holidays and mini breaks. Previously, these have included trips to the Center Parcs, and caravan breaks in Wales. Trips away always include planned schedules of activities for residents to participate in and enjoy.

There are many other activities our residents participate in, such as:

The Alan Shearer Centre

The Alan Shearer Centre is a highly specialist, respite, residential and social facility for people living with complex disabilities and acute sensory impairments. Facilities include a hydrotherapy suite, sensory rooms and cave, a music room, seasonal activities and a café, and is a popular choice for our residents who really enjoy the environment there.

Offsite Activities

Time doing activities offsite are well balanced with activities at home, and residents are supported by staff to do home based activities such as cooking, baking, and reading, and watching TV shows.

The Torchlight Procession

The Torchlight Procession is a themed annual event that is designed to entertain the local community by celebrating the spirit of Kendal. Every year, the event is themed, and last year, the event theme was “fire”. Residents of Shap Road were invited to participate; they made hats to wear to wear to event, and carried the torch through the parade. It was a really enjoyable, immersive experience and is an event that our residents look forward to every year.
