To celebrate the Polish heritage of some of our students, we planned a trip to the Polish supermarkets in our local community. Students enjoyed sharing their memories of some of the items on sale and showed their classmates some traditional ingredients.
Students were given a budget to choose interesting items together to take back to school and try for their lunch. We also shopped for the ingredients to make a Karpatka cake, a traditional Polish cream cake. The peaks of the pastry are said to resemble the Carpathian Mountains that extend across the Slovakia-Poland border.
This was a great way for the group to share some of their culture with staff and students and it was lovely for us all to see our bilingual students speaking Polish to shop owners and customers.
