Find out moreAs well as classrooms and an outside play area, the school has a Vocational unit which gives pupils the opportunity to learn practical skills, as well as gaining a BTec Construction qualification. There is a dining room and social area which students can use at breaks and lunch times. A fully fitted kitchen provides opportunities for students to learn basic cooking skills, leading to a BTec qualification. We extend the curriculum, offering offsite facilities, for example, at the local leisure centre, golf range, parks, riding stables and pupils have accessed swimming lessons during the year. Students also take part in whole school walks, which enables them to chat to staff in a relaxed manner where they find it easier to offload any anxieties. Team building tasks in and out of school encourage problem solving and social skills. To enable and support the social and emotional needs of the students, a dedicated Pastoral room is used for 1:1 sessions and external agencies.
Many students are likely to have significant gaps in their learning, a fear of failure and negative experiences of education in the past. These barriers to learning will be further compounded by the fact that the students are likely to experience a significant range of learning difficulties and mental health conditions.
We have a separate ‘pastoral space’ for students wishing to take a ‘time out’ or take part in pastoral sessions with our dedicated Pastoral Lead in school.
We pride ourselves on providing a warm, caring and nurturing environment where students are prepared to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. Our school staff forms part of an effective multi-disciplinary team that aims to equip learners with the requisite knowledge and skills necessary to meet life's increasingly difficult challenges.
