Students looked at Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in the historical context. How electricity was new and experiments were showing that electric currents could make frogs legs move. Hence the idea about lightning bringing life. Jekyll and Hyde, was discussed in the context of the Jack the Ripper murders. Other Monsters, such as the Lochness Monster were discussed using skills of source enquiry.
Students also looked at sighting of ghosts and tales of ghosts through the ages. Looking at the context of how the idea of ghosts may have originated. There was a large focus on local ghosts of East Anglia and again, photographs were interrogated as to the possibilities of the existence of ghosts. This session ended with a ghost story by Neil that ended with BOOOH so that made the students jump – they took this in good jest. Entertaining the students and staff alike.
In the afternoon session the discussion turned to Vampires. How did a belief in Vampires develop? Could they be real? Students looked at historic stories and recordings of vampires in Britain and the wider continent. There was a good discussion of the work of Bram Stoker and the connections to other authors.
