To celebrate Space Week, all the students and staff at Devon School took part in an activity to create a visual and learning resource about the Solar System.
As it is impossible to depict the comparative sizes of the Sun, 8 planets and the distance between them to the same scale on a screen or on the pages of a book, the school painted a 4.64m Sun on the playground, and then took balls of the comparatively correct size (ranging from the size of a marble to a gym exercise ball) to 8 locations the correct scaled distance from the school (ranging in distance from 150m to 16Km).
We then created a display in school on a map to help students appreciate the sheer enormity of the Solar System.
