This month, students at Cambian Wisbech School had a brilliant time learning about different countries during their Culture Day.
In this session, pupils focused on Israel, learning all about the language, history, art and religion of the country. They also spent time in the kitchen, preparing and tasting all the different foods that come from Israel!
Students were encouraged to create a poster to show everything they learnt about Judaism, the predominant religion in Israel. They looked at where the religion began, its key symbols, places of worship, religious terms and having a go at drawing the Star of David.
The children tried writing their name using different letters of the alphabet, in Hebrew, which proved very tricky as the ‘Aleph bet’ has no vowels! They also learned a few common Hebrew phases such as ‘shalom’ meaning ‘peace’ and ‘Boker Tov’ meaning ‘good morning’.
The class went on to study the art of Israel and looked at the sculptor Ya’akov Agam, who creates sensory art pieces specialising in sight and movement. Agam created the Agamograph, which shows how to create different dimensions in artwork. They had a go making something for themselves, creating a 3D art piece with different pictures, depending on how you looked at it!
The young people later spent some time in the kitchen recreating some staple foods from the Israeli diet including falafel, humous, pitta bread, salad and baklava. This was enjoyed at lunch when students and staff sat together to try the new foods!
Everyone had a fantastic day learning about different cultures and trying all the new experiences.
